Fight, flight and freeze: the three responses, and what freeze looks like
Most people know fight and flight. Fewer recognise freeze, which is often what a burnt-out professional or an overwhelmed child is actually in. The three responses explained, and how we measure them.

Most people know fight and flight. They are the two responses that get all the attention, the racing heart before a hard conversation, the urge to leave a room that has gone tense. Fewer people recognise the third response, freeze, even though it is often the one they are actually living in. Freeze is not calm. It is a nervous system that has run out of road on fight and flight and shut things down instead.
The three responses
All three sit on the same defense cascade, the sequence the nervous system runs through when it decides a demand is too much to meet with its ordinary resources.[1] Fight mobilises the body to confront whatever is in front of it, muscles tense, jaw sets, patience shortens. Flight mobilises the body to get away, restless energy, a racing mind, the urge to keep moving or keep busy. Freeze is different from both. It is a drop in mobilisation rather than a rise, a nervous system that has judged neither fighting nor fleeing will help, and has pulled back into shutdown instead, numb, flat, and hard to get moving.
None of the three is a character trait. They are automatic settings governed by the same hypothalamic pituitary adrenal axis that controls the rest of the stress response, and any of them can become the default when the system has been under load for long enough.[3]
Fight and flight in adults
In adults, fight tends to look like a shortened fuse, a jaw that sets before a difficult email is even opened, irritability that feels disproportionate to whatever triggered it, a body ready for an argument that has not actually started. Flight tends to look like restlessness rather than anger, an inability to sit still through a meeting, a habit of overfilling the diary so there is never a quiet moment to notice how wound up the day has become. Both are visible. Both, at least, look like something is happening.
Freeze in a burnt-out professional
The person we see most often in freeze is not the one who looks stressed. It is the one who has gone quiet. Long days at the desk, a neck that never fully lets go, wired at night and foggy by two, and underneath it a flatness that has crept in without much notice. Tasks that used to take an hour now take three, not from a lack of ability but from a nervous system that keeps stalling before it starts. It gets mistaken for laziness or a motivation problem. More often it is a body that has been in protection for so long it has run out of the fight or flight energy to keep pushing, and has settled into shutdown instead, still switched on underneath, just no longer able to mobilise around it.
This is often the hardest of the three to name, because there is no obvious event attached to it. Nobody remembers the moment they tipped into freeze the way they might remember a stressful week that left them short-tempered. It tends to arrive gradually, after fight and flight have been running for long enough that the system simply runs out of road, and settles into holding rather than reacting.
Fight, flight and freeze in a child
In children, fight and flight are easy to spot, meltdowns over small things, fidgeting, an inability to sit still, waking through the night. Freeze looks almost the opposite, and is easy to miss precisely because it looks quiet. It can show up as a child who goes still and unresponsive rather than loud, who complains of tummy aches with no clear cause, who seems to check out mid-task, or who cannot get themselves started on something as simple as getting dressed. A parent will often describe it as the child simply switching off, going somewhere else behind the eyes, rather than acting out.
Sustained stress in childhood, even the ordinary kind that comes from a demanding week, a change at home or too little sleep, disrupts the same stress response systems that shape health across a lifetime, and a young nervous system does not always show that disruption the way an adult’s does.[4] A meltdown is often assumed to be the whole story, when it may only be the fight and flight half of it. The freeze half, the quiet child, the tummy ache, the broken sleep, tends to be read as separate and unrelated issues rather than the other end of the same pattern.
Why being stuck is the actual issue
It is not which response a person or a child leans on that causes the problem. All three are useful, in the moment they are needed. The issue is a nervous system that gets stuck in one of them long after the original demand has passed, still bracing, still avoiding, or still shut down for a threat that is no longer there. The question is never just fight, flight or freeze. It is how long someone has been stuck there, and what it would take for the body to believe it can come out.
How a nervous system assessment reads it
A useful assessment does not ask you which response you feel like you are in, it measures how your nervous system is actually behaving. Heart rate variability shows how well the push and pull between your stress response and your recovery response, largely carried by the vagus nerve, is functioning moment to moment.
